How to choose natural deodorant

Natural Deodorant is a cosmetic with active ingredients that keep odors at bay without occluding or altering the skin's transpiration.

A cosmetic that accompanies us daily in our lives and must be chosen in a precise and targeted way to avoid a product that is poorly functional or not suitable for our skin.

When choosing a natural deodorant , you should prefer a breathable cosmetic with antimicrobial, antibacterial and refreshing action .

How to choose a natural deodorant: sweat

Sweat is a liquid secreted by the sweat glands and is essential for our body because it eliminates toxins and regulates body temperature.

There are two types of sweat glands:

  • eccrine , scattered throughout the body that produce a liquid composed of 99% water;
  • apocrine , located for example in the armpits, which produce a liquid rich in organic materials and pheromones.

When the sweat produced by the apocrine glands comes into contact with the bacteria naturally present on our skin, these degrade the organic materials present inside it, generating the much-feared bad odor.

How to choose a natural deodorant: the active deodorants

You can evaluate different options of natural deodorants, preferring the one that contains the most suitable and functional deodorant active ingredient for your needs.

Zinc: is a natural deodorant that works by blocking and absorbing the molecules that cause bad odors without interfering with normal perspiration.

Perfume and Essential Oils: Used to cover bad odors, not recommended for sensitive skin.

Alcohol: it is a substance with excellent antimicrobial and antibacterial action that blocks bacterial proliferation but can dry and sensitize the skin.

Triethyl Citrate: is an antibacterial that limits bacterial proliferation and works by forming citric acid which lowers the pH and prevents the formation of fatty acids which cause bad odors.

Bicarbonate: bacteriostatic substance with basic pH that fights bad odors. Its functionality is given by the fact that it alters salinity with consequent slowing down and reduction of bacterial proliferation.

Antioxidants: such as vitamin C and vitamin E which protect the skin and prevent the oxidation of apocrine sweat

A good deodorant must contain deodorant active ingredients combined together for greater effectiveness and functionality together with emollient and soothing extracts that keep the area hydrated and protected from redness and redness.

How to Choose a Natural Deodorant: Types and Use

You can choose the Natural Deodorant that is most suitable for you, choosing one of the five types:

  • spray
  • roll on
  • stick
  • cream
  • solid - for a super green choice

Spray is a deodorant suitable for everyday use and is generally suitable for all skin types.
The Stick, Roll-On and Solid are easy-to-use deodorants but not recommended for shared use in compliance with good hygiene standards. The Cream Deodorant is a type that must be distributed well and ensures intensive action even in case of heavy sweating, also suitable for the most sensitive and dry skin.

Apply the deodorant to a clean armpit, cleansed with antibacterial soap , distributing it with a delicate massage (cream deodorant) , sliding it over the entire armpit area (stick or roll-on deodorant) or spraying it on the affected area (spray deodorant) .

My extra tips

  • Avoid using deodorant in the hours immediately following hair removal , when the skin is most sensitive and delicate.

  • Avoid sleeping with deodorant , go to bed with fresh, clean and freshly cleansed skin.

  • If you have very sensitive skin, avoid deodorants with alcohol high in the ingredients list. Alcohol refreshes and reduces microbial load, but it may irritate the skin and make it dry.

  • Avoid antiperspirants : aluminum salts block the flow of sweat, sweating should never be blocked! You can use natural deodorants with slightly astringent ingredients, such as tea tree essential oil, instead.
In any case, if the sweating is really excessive, it may be time to talk to your doctor.

  • Avoid antibacterial deodorants (e.g. chlorhexidine and triclosan): the microbiotic balance of the skin is very important and eliminating bacteria also means destroying the good bacterial flora.
