Washable Pads: Frequently Asked Questions Answered

Washable pads are a great alternative to traditional disposable pads.
Suitable for delicate, sensitive and irritation-prone skin but also to enjoy greater comfort and well-being during the days of the menstrual cycle.
You can also use washable pads together with the menstrual cup, choosing them for example on days of lighter flow or as additional protection, especially during the first uses of the cup.

Washable pads are available in various sizes, formats and assorted colours (white, coloured or patterned).

Washable Sanitary Pads: What Are They?

Washable pads have the same anatomical shape as disposable pads with several layers of fabric that serve to absorb the flow.
They are equipped with comfortable wings that allow the pad to stay still: you just need to fold the wings and close the automatic press stud.
Washable pads are breathable, natural pads available in organic cotton or fleece fabric with a dry effect and very easy to clean.

You can choose washable pads in two different formats: All-in One and Pocket.
The All-in-One format is a single piece on the outside with waterproof fabric, that is, made with a single absorbent fabric sewn together with the water-repellent fabric.
The Pocket Format is equipped with a pocket where the absorbent insert is inserted. This pocket is very functional as it allows water to pass through the fibers to clean them properly. It is also possible to choose the quantity of inserts to insert based on the amount of flow.

Washable Sanitary Pads: Why Choose Them?

You can choose washable pads for several reasons:

  • they are gentle on the skin and help avoid any skin irritation;
  • They are economical: washable pads last about 5-6 years
  • They are eco-friendly: no more disposable plastic that takes decades to degrade.

Washable Sanitary Pads: When to Use Them?

Washable pads can be used in different situations and constants of life:

  • during your menstrual cycle or a few days before, to avoid getting stained and dirty;
  • together with the menstrual cup for greater safety;
  • after giving birth, instead of using the classic disposable ones;
  • in case of slight incontinence;
  • on the days of ovulation to avoid getting dirty due to various losses;
  • in case of spotting.

Washable Sanitary Napkins: How Many Pieces to Buy?

If you have decided to buy washable pads, I will help you choose the right number of pieces to buy.

If you want to use only washable pads during your period, start by considering the average number of disposable pads used per day and buying a 3-day supply.

If you want to alternate them with disposables or the cup, start by purchasing 3 to 6 pieces.

If you are still unsure and do not know if this type is right for you, you can buy a set that contains all the sizes, to realize the quality, effectiveness and difference.

Washable Sanitary Pads: How to Wash Them?

Washable pads last about 5-6 years and can be washed with your laundry, taking care to avoid the use of bleach or stain removers that could ruin the fabric and make it less effective.

After purchase: the first washes.

To improve absorbency and clean them of any manufacturing residues, wash your pads as soon as you buy them.
I suggest you prepare your pads by doing 3 initial washes at 60 degrees: for the first wash use a delicate soap, do the other two instead without detergent.

After use

When the pad is dirty, rinse it with plenty of cold water to remove the blood. Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear. Use only cold water: hot water tends to set the blood into the fibers.

If you are away from home, store the used pad in a plastic bag, to keep the pad moist and prevent it from making a mess. Once home, you can rinse the pad with cold water.

Once rinsed, you can keep it in a container with a lid until washing in the washing machine; you can keep the pads moist or soak them in water. If you choose this second solution, remember to change the water at least once a day, to avoid bad odors.

Do not wait more than 3 days before washing in the washing machine, to avoid ruining the fabric.
If there are dried stains, you can rub gently with Marseille soap, taking care not to damage the PUL layer.
Rinse off any soap residue carefully so as not to damage the fabric.

There is no need to do a special washing machine: you can wash them with your towels or other clothes. The important thing is not to use fabric softener, because it creates a layer on the fibers that prevents proper absorption.

If the pad is stained, wash it in the washing machine at a temperature below 40°. If there are no stains and you want to do a more thorough wash, you can also wash it at 60°.
