Dermatitis is one of the most common skin problems among both adults and children.
The term indicates a generic state of inflammation of the skin that is characterized by redness, itching and irritation.
The different types of dermatitis
Dermatitis manifests itself with different symptoms and has different triggers and causes.
Let's look at the main types and their characteristics together.
Seborrheic dermatitis
Seborrheic dermatitis is characterized by the presence of strong inflammation with red spots, scaling, itching and secretions. The area where it occurs most frequently is the scalp, but it can also appear in the armpits, external genitals, face and ears.
The trigger of seborrheic dermatitis is often identified with the presence of a yeast of the Malassezia genus , but the causes are not yet established.
Malassezia furfur is thought to be the causative agent of various dermatological problems, this yeast also appears to be involved in the growth and progression of psoriasis, folliculitis, dandruff and some forms of atopic dermatitis.
Contact dermatitis
Contact dermatitis, or allergic dermatitis , appears on the skin as a reaction to its contact with the allergen: stinging or irritating substances of natural or chemical origin. It is characterized by a red, itchy inflammation with indefinite contours. In the most acute cases, vesicles and crusts may also appear.
One of the most common is nickel and cobalt allergy.
Dermatitis herpetiformis
Dermatitis herpetiformis, or Duhring's dermatitis , is the cutaneous manifestation of a food intolerance: gluten intolerance and celiac disease.
The inflamed skin appears as red, erythematous spots, blisters and boils that cause very strong itching.
The blisters should not be scratched to avoid causing small hemorrhages and the subsequent appearance of scabs and scars.
The areas most affected by Duhring's dermatitis are the lumbar region, the knees and the elbows.
Stress dermatitis
It is a form of skin inflammation that appears when the psychophysical balance of the organism is compromised by acute stress factors. Stress dermatitis often appears with red spots on the face, neck, hands and feet. The rash causes burning and itching.
Perioral dermatitis
Perioral dermatitis appears as eczema with papules, pustules and vesicles similar to those of acne , often associated with burning in the mouth. It therefore manifests itself on the face in a particular way, as the name suggests, in the area around the lips but can extend to the cheeks, chin and forehead.
The causes have not yet been discovered but a connection with the hormonal system and the reaction to some substances present in cosmetic products seems plausible.
Sweat dermatitis
Sweat dermatitis, also called Miliaria or Sudamina, is a skin irritation caused by sweat.
If the excretory ducts of the sweat glands are blocked, sweat cannot escape and is released subcutaneously, causing a rash with red spots, itching and the possible appearance of small blisters.
It manifests itself more in hot climates and in areas of the body with a higher concentration of sweat glands such as the armpits, the hollow of the knees and arms, the abdomen, groin area and inner thighs.
