Homemade Hair Dye: How to Color Your Hair Without Damaging It

[ApSC sc_key=sc2106113820][/ApSC]

DIY hair dye is a practical, convenient and economical way to cover gray hair at home.

There are so many hair colors on the market, but today we will see how to choose the color of the dye and how to apply it without mistakes for a perfect DIY hair coloring!

How do you choose your hair dye color?

Home dyes that you can buy online, at the supermarket or in the pharmacy are permanent hair dyes, which do not go away after a few washes but are permanently attached to your hair. For this reason, it is important to carefully choose the color that we are going to apply.

I recommend using a hair dye without ammonia, without PPD, without resorcinol, without mineral oils and without parabens such as Villa Lodola - Lucens Umbra hair dyes or Alkolor Alkemilla hair dyes .

The image on the box or the strands you see in the color chart can help you understand what the final result will be; however, the image is only a guideline, as the final result may not be identical. To avoid mistakes, you can ask your hairdresser what color they used for you or you can rely on the numbers on the dye.

If you have never colored your hair,
identify your natural tone. You can then choose a dye that is lighter by a maximum of 2 tones, the same tone as your hair or as dark as you want.

If you already have permanent hair color,
you can use a dye that is the same tone as your current hair color or darker.

My advice is to use these colors only if you do not intend to make drastic changes: if you want to lighten a lot or if you want to go from a blonde to a very dark tone, always turn to a professional hairdresser. This way you will avoid damaging your hair with aggressive bleaching or obtaining unwanted shades on your hair.

The color result will also be influenced by the amount of gray hair to be covered:

  • if you have less than a third of your total hair is white : the color choice can be the same as your natural color tone, darker or lighter, always by a maximum of 2 tones.
  • If you have a lot of white hair then we recommend a color of the same tone or darker
  • If you have almost all your hair gray , let's say over 80% of your hair, then you can choose the color you prefer!

Are your white hairs resistant to dye? Don't give up! Choose a shade that is 1 tone darker than the result you want to achieve!

The Best Brown Hair Dyes

What do the numbers on hair dye mean?

The numbers on hair dye are a universal language that allows you to understand what color you will get with the application of the product. These codes are valid for all dyes, both at home and in the salon, and are the same all over the world.

The colors on the tint are decimal numbers, divided by a comma.

To the left of the dot you find the tone height
, from dark to light, on a numerical scale from 1 to 10:

1: Black

2: Bruno

3: Dark Brown

4: Medium Brown

5: Light Brown

6: Dark Blonde

7: Medium Blonde

8: Light Blonde

9: Very Light Blonde

10: Platinum

To the right of the dot you will find the shade of the reflection
:

0: Natural

1: Ash

2: Irrisée

3: Golden

4: Copper

5: Mahogany

6: Red

7: Sand

I'll give you an example: the 5.65 dye corresponds to a Light Brown (5) with Mahogany Red highlights (.65).

The Best Blonde Dyes

If you don't know which color to choose, I recommend using the color without reflections, for example 5.0 ; in this case the color is very natural, without marked reflections.

If you want to experiment with highlights, remember that over time the color will tend to oxidize and reveal warm highlights
. If you prefer to stick to cool tones, always opt for natural colors or with ash/irrisée highlights.

Can I use dye if my hair is colored with henna?

Yes. First, let the color you have drain well. Wash after wash, the typical layering of dyeing herbs thins out. You can then dye your entire hair.

In the meantime, you can dye the regrowth, carefully choose the tone and the reflection that best harmonizes, the choice of reflection in this case is usually between red .6, mahogany .5 or warm brown .7

How do you apply hair dye?

Before you proceed with the application, you need to decide whether you want to cover only the regrowth or whether you need to cover all of your hair.

It can happen that you get a color that is too dark, so my advice is to start with a color that is one tone lower and possibly choose a darker one for subsequent applications.

If you have already dyed your hair, my advice is to only color the roots, as applying dye too close together all over your head could overload your hair with too much pigment, making it darker and duller.

Let's prepare the dye:

  1. Mix developer milk and color well.
  2. Divide your hair into sections, brush well and start applying with the bottle or brush on unwashed and dry hair! This guarantees scalp protection and maximum effectiveness.
  3. Leave it to rest.
  4. After the processing time, rinse well with warm water and then shampoo!

If you need to revive the color on the lengths, you can proceed as follows:

  1. apply the color on the regrowth and leave it on
  2. After 20/25 minutes, apply the remainder to the lengths, strand by strand, massaging
  3. wait another 10/15 minutes to reach a total time of 30-35 minutes.
  4. rinse and shampoo.

If you think you won't apply it on the lengths or you have very short hair, you probably shouldn't use all the product, so halve it and you can keep it. The color and the developer milk must be kept separate and tightly closed; once the mixture is prepared, it must be applied immediately and cannot be stored.

To halve the doses, get a kitchen scale that weighs to the gram and has a tare, a bowl and a brush. All you need to do is halve the doses of colouring cream and activator milk, close the containers well and store them in a cool, dry place until the next dye!
