Find out what it is, when it should be done and what the double henna application is for! Especially if you need to cover grey hair, learn the correct technique now to get a perfect result!
What is meant by double pass with henna and other dyeing herbs?
Double pass means two applications of henna and dyeing herbs in order to even out the hair and then obtain the desired hair color!
The two applications, the two steps, can be done on the same day or one or more days apart from each other.
The first step: the first application with henna
The first step must be done with only red henna , then the lawsonia
This first step serves to:
- make the hair as uniform as possible by pigmenting the hair
- tone any gray hair and regrowth
Leave your red henna on for at least 45-60 minutes, as always covered with a cap or to keep it nice and warm.
Once the processing time has elapsed, rinse with warm water, pat your hair dry, and it will turn out to be a coppery orange red or just highlighted depending on the starting color.
The color now obtained is only the base and will be covered with the second step to obtain the chosen color.
The second step: the second application with henna and dyeing herbs
The second step consists of applying the mix of dyeing herbs, with a percentage of red henna if necessary, to achieve the final color you want to obtain.
The hair is completely evened out with the chosen color.
It can be done on the same day as the first step or in the following days.
Being the final step, the application time will depend on the result you want to obtain, if only a reflection then 30 to 60 minutes are sufficient while if we want a complete and covering colouring up to 2 hours will be needed.
When should you do a double pass with henna?
The double pass with henna and dyeing herbs is not always necessary.
So we recommend you do this when:
- you have a lot of white hair and you want to cover it
- You have very thick hair that is resistant to color.
- you have regrowth and want to even out the color
- you want to get a very dark final color
- if you start from a bleached base and don't want to risk finding yourself with green highlights
When should you NOT apply a double coat of henna?
In some cases, the double pass is not only unnecessary, but is actually not recommended:
- Your hair is light brown and you just want to give it a few highlights.
- you have red highlights that you want to keep
- you have white hair and want to achieve a final honey or light brown color, in this case you will get the desired color with just one step!
