The correct skincare routine

Skincare is the daily care of your facial skin that helps you have healthy and hydrated skin. A correct skincare routine that is suitable for your skin type allows you to combat skin imperfections such as blackheads, redness, wrinkles and skin blemishes.

How do you do skincare?

The correct skincare routine consists of a few simple steps, to be done every day in the morning and in the evening. You can use the same cosmetics for the two moments of the day, or you can choose different cosmetics for the morning and evening routine.

Choose cosmetics suitable for your skin type:

  • if you have oily skin , use purifying but delicate products to regulate sebum production;
  • if you have dry skin , use hydrating and nourishing products to restore the skin's protective film;
  • If you have mature skin , choose products with targeted active ingredients to combat wrinkles and sagging skin.

I recommend you use organic skincare cosmetics , rich in natural active ingredients, without silicones, paraffins or ingredients that can clog skin pores.

What are the steps of a proper skincare routine?

Let's now see together what are the steps for a correct skincare routine.

1 - Make-up removal

Beautiful skin is above all clean skin! So let's start our evening skincare routine by removing the make-up we used during the day. Make-up is designed to stay on the skin and this can lead to clogging of the pores, giving rise to imperfections and impurities.

Use a gentle makeup remover , in your preferred formulation (butter, two-phase, micellar water) to dissolve makeup and remove it.

If you want to make your skincare routine zero waste, say goodbye to disposable cotton pads and use a sea sponge or a reusable washable pad.

Use a gentle eye makeup remover and remember not to rub to avoid irritation and fine lines around the eyes!

Once you have removed your makeup, rinse your face with warm water and move on to step two!

2 - Cleansing

By cleansing we remove the last traces of make-up, but also excess sebum, sweat, smog and impurities.

Cleansing should be done morning and evening, to leave the skin clean and ready to receive the active ingredients contained in the cosmetics that we will apply later. Cleansing products can be of various types and can cleanse:

  • by affinity : with oil-based detergents (butters or oils)
  • by contrast : with foaming cleansers

You can also use both cleansers: first the one for affinity, then the one for contrast. In this case we are talking about double cleansing, one of the pillars of the Korean skincare routine.

3 - Toning

By using toner, we restore the skin's pH after cleansing.

You can do this step using:

  • a hydrolate : obtained from the distillation of aromatic and medicinal plants
  • a facial tonic : a solution rich in specific active ingredients based on its function

Hydrolate and tonic should also be chosen based on the needs of your skin type.

Apply to dry skin and pat gently until absorbed.

4 - Eye contour

For the eye contour it is necessary to choose a dedicated cosmetic, designed to be well tolerated in such a delicate and sensitive area.

You can choose a hydrating or nourishing eye contour, but there are also eye contours on the market that combat bags and dark circles, eye contours against wrinkles and eye contours with an illuminating action.

Apply the eye contour by gently tapping with your ring finger to help the product absorb. You can also use a roll-on eye contour, light and easy to apply.

5 - Hydration

The last phase of skincare is hydration, which is done by applying serum and face cream to our skin.

Serums and face creams are cosmetic products that make the skin soft, hydrated and nourished and that contain ingredients for a specific treatment. This means that you can find on the market anti-wrinkle serums and face creams, face creams for oily skin, anti-blemish face serums and many more.

My advice is to start with a face serum with hyaluronic acid , an essential product in every skincare routine! Hyaluronic acid is a component that we naturally find in our skin, which keeps it soft and hydrated.

Then move on to the cream, which you will have to choose based on your needs. If you have oily skin, choose a cream with purifying and astringent active ingredients, better if a light cream or a gel that is quickly absorbed.

If you have dry skin, I recommend a nourishing cream, which helps your skin stay soft and hydrated.

Apply serum and cream to dry skin and massage gently until absorbed.

The extra steps of the skincare routine

These are the daily steps for a proper skincare routine.

There are then two extra steps, to be inserted periodically for a complete treatment.

Exfoliation

This step removes dead cells that accumulate on our skin, to give a smooth, even and even appearance.

You can exfoliate mechanically, for example using a facial scrub with microgranules or you can exfoliate using an enzymatic peel, which removes dead cells without rubbing, thanks to specific ingredients contained within it.

Use the scrub or peel 1-2 times a week, immediately after cleansing.

If you have very dry or sensitive skin, I recommend exfoliating once every 10-15 days with a gentle enzymatic exfoliant.

Face mask

The face mask is an intensive treatment for the beauty of your skin. You can find different types of face masks, cream or fabric, clay face masks or you can also make DIY face masks at home with natural ingredients.

I recommend that you always use a face mask suitable for your skin type and respect the application times indicated on the package.

Use the face mask immediately after exfoliation: the skin is more receptive to the active ingredients contained in the product and the face mask will be even more effective!

Fabric face masks are a great extra treatment that allows you to achieve targeted results in just one application, thanks to their high concentration of active ingredients. Find out more about fabric masks in our guide!
