Salicylic acid is an important ingredient found in many dermatological and cosmetic products.
An acid with exceptional qualities that make it a panacea for the skin!
In fact, it has exfoliating properties, which make it particularly suitable for the treatment of problems with facial skin, for example when there are imperfections and acne , or with body skin when hyperkeratosis occurs , that is, the excessive increase in the epithelial layer that causes an annoying and unsightly thickening of the skin.
What is salicylic acid?
A substance widely distributed in nature and present in plants and some fruits.
Salicin was already extracted from white willow in ancient times : various pathologies including fever and inflammation were treated by chewing the willow bark directly!
At a cosmetic level, it is used , in different concentrations, to treat skin conditions and blemishes for its antiseptic, healing and above all keratolytic properties : it can dissolve part of the horny layer of the skin without attacking the underlying cells.
Salicylic acid for the treatment of skin blemishes
For this reason it is used to create creams with exfoliating properties and as a treatment for
- remove skin blemishes
- perform peeling
- fight acne
- fight dandruff
- treat calluses, corns and warts (hyperkeratosis)
- promote cell renewal
This acid also has interesting properties: it is antibacterial and a natural disinfectant , therefore it speeds up the healing of skin lesions and fights any inflammation and infections.
As we mentioned above, its primary function in cosmetics is keratolytic, that is, it removes the most superficial layer of the skin: its dead cells. An exceptional peeling with a renewing effect on the skin that immediately becomes healthier and brighter.
Don't worry! Salicylic acid only removes the “hard” keratinized surface layer: the skin has between 15 and 20 layers of dead cells, the corneocytes.
This peeling significantly improves the absorption of subsequent treatments.
The best combination is with hyaluronic acid, which gives the skin hydration and elasticity.
Salicylic acid in cosmetics is therefore synonymous with cell renewal and anti-aging action!
